What you can see and do
Explore Australia's largest collection of heritage rolling stock
Whether it's the stunning Governor General's Carriage or the Rail Pay Bus – used for transporting employees’ wages all over the state's rail system, we have something interesting to see at every corner.
Take a steam train ride
Bring your museum experience to life with a 45-minute steam train ride from historic Thirlmere Station to Buxton and return. The train will be powered by 118-year-old steam locomotive 3265, from the collection of the Powerhouse Museum.
Please note: steam train rides depart Thirlmere Station at 10.00am, 11.30am, 1.30pm and 3.00pm. Please make sure you arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your departure.
Keeping you safe
We're committed to keeping you safe. This includes limiting visitor numbers at any one time, regular cleaning of onsite amenities, hand sanitiser stations throughout the museum and the temporary closure of our kiosk and some exhibits.
