LEARNING

School groups

The NSW Rail Museum has a vast collection that provides a range of hands-on teaching and learning opportunities for school groups.

The railways revolutionised the lives of ordinary people in NSW: they brought people together, allowed the transport of goods and services across great distances and into new areas, introduced ‘railway time’ and timetabling, provided people with jobs and built communities. Each object on display at the NSW Rail Museum has its own story to tell about the social, economic and technological significance of the railways to the state’s history.

We offer both guided and teacher-led education program options. The guided program lasts for 90 minutes and includes a tour and student activity booklet. The Teachers Notes provide supporting material for teacher-led tours, including a suggested museum trail and prompt questions.

School group pricing:

  • Guided visit: $10 per student

  • Teacher-led visit: $5 per student

  • Guided visit including railmotor ride: $15 per student (minimum 50 passengers required)

  • Accompanying staff/carers free of charge to a max ratio of 1:10 adults to students. Additional adults: $15 each.

  • Additional carers for special education groups are free.

Teacher resources

Research suggests that learning in museums is maximised if the students are prepared for their visit. Providing students with an overview of the museum layout, making them familiar with the key concepts on display and integrating their visit into units of work studied at school, can help students retain learning.

The museum provides the following resources to help you and your students get the most out of your visit:
