The NSW Rail Museum offers a rich collection and immersive environment that supports hands-on learning for school groups.

Explore how railways transformed life in NSW — from connecting communities and powering industry to shaping time itself. Every object on display tells a unique story of the state’s social, economic and technological development.

Heritage train rides can be added to your visit (subject to availability). All school and vacation care bookings must be made in advance.

Stage 1 and 2 education program

The NSW Rail Museum Education Program is aligned with the current NSW syllabus for the Australian Curriculum and was highly commended at the 2025 National Trust Heritage Awards.

Designed for Stages 1 and 2, the program covers Mathematics, Science, Geography and History through engaging, curriculum-linked experiences.

Each guided session runs for just under four hours and includes a museum tour with hands-on learning, a student activity booklet, and an optional heritage train ride (subject to availability).

  • Pre and post visit activities

School group pricing:

  • Guided visit: $10 per student

  • Guided visit + heritage train ride: $15 per student (minimum 25 passengers required)

  • Accompanying staff/carers free of charge to a max ratio of 1:10 adults to students. Additional adults: $15 per person.

  • Carers for special needs education groups are free.

Vacation care and childcare groups are welcome at the NSW Rail Museum on any weekday, including during the school holidays.

 

We offer both guided and teacher-led visit options, allowing you to explore the museum's rich history and fascinating exhibits through an engaging museum trail. For an added experience, you can include a heritage train ride as an optional extra.

 

Vacation care / childcare group pricing:

  • Guided visit: $10 per student

  • Self-guided visit: $5 per student

  • Guided visit including heritage train ride: $15 per student (minimum 25 passengers required when requesting a train ride not on an existing session)

  • Accompanying staff/carers free of charge to a max ratio of 1:10 adults to students. Additional adults: $15 each.

  • Additional carers for special education groups are free.
