For the first time since its return to steam earlier this year, locomotive 2705 is leading heritage steam train rides along the Loop Line at the NSW Rail Museum!

Steam train rides with 2705 run daily from 27 September to 1 October 2025, departing Thirlmere Station to Buxton and return at: 10.30am | 12.00pm | 2.00pm

Hop on board and experience​ a trip back in time from Thirlmere Station this beautiful timber-bodied railmotor.

Experience an historic steam train ride behind  locomotive 3001, a 108-year-old steam engine which once serviced the Sydney metropolitan region!

On weekends and during the school holidays, a small range of drinks, tea, coffee, pre-made sandwiches, salads and snacks are available from the NSW Rail Museum Kiosk.

You can also visit one of the many local cafes, pubs or restaurants — either before or after your visit to the NSW Rail Museum. For more information on local eateries visit the Visit Wollondilly website.

Picnic areas 

With over 10,000 square metres of lawns and sheltered picnic tables, the grounds are the perfect place to have a picnic – don’t forget a rug!

Terms and conditions
  • All tickets are for entry to the NSW Rail Museum from 10.00am to 4.00pm on weekdays and 9.00am to 5.00pm on weekends.
  • 'Museum only' includes all activities, except a steam train ride.
  • Please be sure of your availability before you book as there are NO REFUNDS OR EXCHANGES offered.
  • Children under 2 are admitted FREE but must sit on adults lap during train ride.
  • The NSW Rail Museum reserves the right to change locomotive power without notice, however will endeavour to notify customers of this change should the need arise for operational reasons.
